LACK OF INFORMATION COSTS EUROPEAN RECYCLING MARKET €1 BILLION PER YEAR
New ‘green’ solution from Green Diamond helps recycling companies save 30% of servicing costs and comply with new regulations
COLOGNE, Germany, AUG 6, 2009 - Green Diamond Technologies, Europe’s fastest-growing provider of leading edge ‘green’ solutions for the recycling industry, has today announced that its new solution, the EMERALD Bin Monitoring Solution, has the capability to save the European recycling market more than €1 billion a year.
The company claims that the recycling market in Europe is wasting up to €1 billion a year on deploying costly, inefficient practices due to a lack of information. It further states that pressure on already resource-stretched recycling companies is set to intensify with the introduction of new regulations, which will demand the recording of waste management and recycling targets on a national basis. This, in turn, will necessitate the recording of recycling quantities by companies that collect and recycle waste.
Launching its new solution, the EMERALD series, an advanced solution that optimises the effectiveness of recycling collection services through the provision of real-time information, Mark McCarville, CEO of Green Diamond Technologies, says, “This issue is actually two sides of the same coin. On the one hand, recycling companies are throwing away good money due to a lack of information. Without adequate information, recycling companies are forced to service recycling bins irrespective of whether they need to be emptied or not. This is introducing a lot of wasted effort and cost into their business model, which can be easily eliminated.
“On the other hand, we now have a set of regulations with ambitious targets for recycling, which will force recycling companies to put into place procedures and technologies to improve information gathering regarding their recycling targets and collection quantities. This information will be required from each individual recycling company in the build-up to a national total,” concludes McCarville.
With its new solution, EMERALD, Green Diamond Technologies claims that recycling companies can save up to 30% of their overall servicing costs simply by providing them with the information that they need, whilst simultaneously enabling them to comply fully and wholly with new waste and recycling regulations. The new regulations, such as the Waste Framework Directive (2008), aims to increase national recycling rates to 50% for household waste (from its current level at 27%) and 70% for demolition waste in each EU country.
“The EMERALD Series is all about providing recycling companies with the right information at the right time,” explains McCarville. “Each bin is fitted with an optical infra-red sensor which detects the fill level of the container and wirelessly transmits this information in real-time back to the recycling company, enabling them to determine whether or not they need to devote resources to emptying the container.”
Green Diamond Technologies claims that by moving away from a scheduled servicing model, where every bin gets emptied regardless of whether or not it needs to be, to a directed servicing model, where only those bins that have reached capacity levels are emptied, recycling companies can save up to €1,000 per bin per year.
