Better World Books (www.BetterWorldBooks.com) is a for-profit social enterprise that collects and sells books online matching each purchase with a donation, Book for Book™, and with each sale generating funds for literacy initiatives. With more than eight million new and used titles in stock, Better World Books is a self-sustaining company that balances the social, economic and environmental values of its stakeholders. Better World Books diverts books from landfills by conducting book drives on thousands of college campuses, tailoring discards and donation programs for libraries, working with bookstores and their surplus stock, taking individual donations online and running national book drives. Since its founding in 2003, the Mishawaka, Ind.-based company has raised over $10 million for libraries and literacy, donated over 5 million books; re-used or recycled over 57 million books and achieved 29,000 tons of carbon offsets through carbon balanced shipping.

Signing of the agreement comes after the trial of SmartBin technology in a number of Better World Books Drop Boxes. The sensors measured a range of parameters, the most important of which was the fill level. “One of the vital issues for Better World Books is to keep an environmentally-friendly image by ensuring that the area around Drop Boxes are always clean”, says Alan Mangan, Director of Business Development in SmartBin. “Our Customer could achieve this thanks to SmartBin technology”. By logging in to the user-friendly SmartBin live interface, Better World Books employees could see which Drop Boxes were full or nearly full and the drivers were dispatched only to the locations which needed attention. This in turn resulted in decreased miles travelled, no overflowing Drop Boxes, less carbon emissions used and increased collection efficiencies. Vice President of Better World Books, Dustin Holland, commented on the partnership with SmartBin: "Better World Books is pleased to install SmartBin technology in our growing network of Drop Boxes.  Our customers and partners expect the very best from an innovative, socially-responsible company, and our partnership with SmartBin allows us to deliver on this expectation.  This technology enables us to efficiently monitor and maintain our network of book donation points throughout the country, while minimizing our service footprint and maximizing the value we offer to our customers and partners."
